Assistant Editor Candidate
Ashley McKinney is a working Assistant Editor and Editor in Hollywood. After being diagnosed with PTSD in 2015, she has been an incredibly passionate and outspoken advocate for herself and others in the industry who struggle with mental illness. No one should have to deal with stigma in 2022. In the summer of 2022 Ashley worked with other assistant editors to create the Disability and Accessibility steering committee. She has also worked closely with the Local 700 Young Workers Group as a core and founding member to organize and plan interlocal events for all of this in the IATSE Hollywood Bargaining Group.
Outside of her work with the Guild she has volunteered with Blue Collar Post Collective since 2015. She loves the world of Post Production with a particular passion for independent film, Comic book series, and all things Harley Quinn. Her love for Post is only rivaled by her love for hockey. She is an avid St. Louis Blues fan and can often be found passionately expressing her support for her team.
As one of the creators of the Disability and Accessibility steering committee, I strive to create a more accessible and inclusive union. From interpreters for events, to pushing to change the guild constitution to allow for virtual attendance to meetings, everyone should have equal accessibility to their guild.
I will always be open and honest about my own experiences with PTSD, and I will continue to push to end the stigma around all mental health issues. I want to create more panels, provide more resources, and help everyone get the support they need.
Not only does a hardship fund help give us leverage and support when we go into negotiations, it also puts our members first and helps establish a safety net in case of another catastrophic event like the pandemic.
Host more ‘We Are The Union’ events to foster more guild engagement among the rank-and-file membership.
I think it’s important for our guild to continue to build off of the momentum started at the Car Painting Event last year. More interlocal connection between the 13 bargaining unit IATSE Guilds helps strengthen our cause during negotiations.
Foster more mentorship within the guild to create a career ladder with plenty of opportunities for lifting others up.
